Had friends visiting for the weekend, and this place was recommended as a great budget omakase. So we came here Saturday night and I was not disappointed. The decor alone was much more upscale than I expected, and the service was very quick and pleasant. We all ordered the omakase for $95 (around 14 courses), while I also added the $35 4-course supplement. For just the base omakase, under $100 for what they served was really an incredible deal. While it wasn't quite on par in terms of personalization and quantity as Kusakabe or Sushi Shin's offerings, those are also easily 3-4x the price. We also tried a roll (that had eel and crab), which was delicious. At this price point, the quality of fish and presentation makes this probably the best value omakase in the Bay, which was originally the crown I gave Sushi Hon. Thankfully my friends introduced me here, or I would never have found this gem. It's just too bad it's so far from where I live, but it's definitely worth a repeat when I'm in the area. If you're local, definitely give this place a try.
Holy moly what great sushi! Their beet salad is extremely delicious and a must try. There isn't a terrible thing on this menu, ever! Though I wish there would be more vegetarian options for my veggie friends. Service is fabulous as is the atmosphere. Can be pricey but worth the splurge. Sasa is at the top of my favorites list!
Food, ambience, and service was immaculate. Opted for the sushi tasting and a la carte nirigi over the omakase. Great experience. Would come back when visiting the city to try the rolls. Only downside is we could not remember which nigiri we were eating since there were so many and they only verbally told us as the beginning of the meal.
I came here with my husband for a birthday celebration, and we would come back! The fish was fresh, and the service was attentive and quick. We ordered: - 2 Uni Spoons - 1 Ika Geso - 2 Sushi Tastings - 1 O-Toro Nigiri (comes with 2pc) This was the perfect amount for two people that allowed us to try a little bit of everything. The uni spoon is worth a try, as it is a crazy burst of intense flavors all at once!
I had a fantastic serene lunch on a Tuesday at noon. I made a reservation just in case and since I came at opening, I was seated immediately. I ordered the soba tea and my server poured my tea for me whenever she came by the table. I was not expecting that level of service so it was nice to be delighted. The agedashi tofu was the best I've ever had. The breading on the tofu was small crunchy beads of something, I'm not sure what it was but it was a great contrasting texture to the soft tofu inside. I appreciated the healthy helping of bonito flakes. What took it to the next level for me was the strands of crab in the broth at the bottom. The whole dish just worked! I loved the mystery box! What a unique way to present a chirashi. I have had larger cuts of fish with chirashi bowls at other restaurants but the size of the cuts here were more on par with nigiri pieces. There's a small ball of sushi rice under the small bowls with fish. I never finish the rice that comes with a chirashi bowl anyways so I loved how I get some rice but don't feel bad about leaving anything uneaten. Everything tasted fresh and delicious! Highly recommend!
I love omakase a couple times a year, but they can get expensive at $150+ per person. Sasa offers theirs for $95 as of June 2024, which is relatively affordable for a higher end Japanese restaurant. The omakase consists of six courses: zensai, sashimi, two plates of nigiri, chawanmushi, and akadashi. Everything was beautifully presented, fresh, and flavorful. Dishes came out in a timely manner as well. Besides their omakase, Sasa also offers your standard variety of à la carte items like sushi, sashimi, and Japanese dishes at relatively affordable prices. If you're looking for a more intimate, personalized chef to patron interaction at the bar seating, look elsewhere. Sasa's bar seating has the chef counter elevated so you can't really see the chefs in action. However, service is very warm, nice, and attentive. Sasa is located on the upper level of the Japantown Center East Mall.
Excellent sushi, I went there for my birthday during a layover in San Francisco. I had the chefs omakase and several other nigiri. Top notch!
Great quality food all at a reasonable price. We got the 9 mini charashi bowl mystery box. It was such a good deal! You get to sample a variety and they were all delicious. The sushi and sashimi were all super tasty, it's one of my favorite spots. The ambiance is nice but not too fancy. A great spot for an enjoyable dinner out with family or friends.
The mystery chirashi don here is one of the best chirashis I've had in SF! Each piece practically melted in my mouth and tasted so fresh. I appreciated the pickles that accompanied my meal as I find the standard pickled ginger to be too strong of a palate cleanser. The ones offered by Sasa are perfect for the job. The dish was sufficient for a standalone meal and I was pleasantly full by the end of it. Although I got my chirashi delivered, it held up great and I fully intend to visit Sasa in-person. It's on the pricier side as far as dinner options go, but here the high quality matched the cost, which is something I can't say for many restaurants in the area. To that end, I'll save a return trip for a special occasion. In the meantime, I'll keep recommending this spot to anyone visiting Japantown.
Sometimes I find it difficult to find quality places to eat in touristy areas. I'm guessing that places in these kinds of areas traditionally don't have to worry about quality as much because income isn't solely reliant on repeat customers. Sasa is definitely not one of those places. The food was really fresh and looked vibrant. Inside is pretty simple and elegant. Didn't need a reservation for weeknight dinner but it did fill up later in the evening. A little bit more upscale compared to most other places in Japantown, but you are paying for fantastic quality.
